The Key Players in the War:
There were many people that were involved in the Civil War. But, there were some that were key players. Those that were completely exceptional, their names made it on this list.
Harriet Beecher Stowe and her husband Calvin Ellis Stowe were I would say part of the underground railroad. Her and her husband helped an ex-slave that was a servant escape up North to Canada. When the Fugitive Slave Bill was passed, she was angry. She then decided to write a novel named Uncle Tom's Cabin which pushed on freedom narratives, interviews with former slaves and participants of the underground railroad both black and white alike.
Charles Sumner was the senator of the state of Massachusetts. He was an avid Abolitionist leader of the Republican party. He out spoke on the rights that blacks should have . On May of 1856 Sumner made a speech opposing the Nebraska-Kansas Act, a speech that nearly costs him his life. He accused senators Andrew P. Butler and Stephen A. Douglas for supporting slavery. Two days later Congressmen Preston S. Brooks attacked Sumner with cane and beat him severely. Sumner recovered after 3 years.
John Brown was a religious man and had a fervent belief in the abolishing of slavery. So much that he gave land to fugitive slaves. Though they lacked in money Brown and his wife both agreed that they would raise black youth as their own. He also participated in the underground railroad. In 1815 he established the " League of Gileadties" an organization that worked at protecting escaped slaves from slave catchers. Brown and his family 1847-1855 continued to fight for the abolition of slavery. During the year of 1859 Brown with 21 other men. 5 being black and 16 those white, raised a federal arsenal on Harper's Ferry. Brown was wounded and quickly captured. He was then sent to Charleston, Virgina where he was convicted of treason and hanged on December 2, 1859.
Stephen Douglas was a congress man and senator for the Democratic party in Illinois. In 1858 the during the senatorial campaign, Douglas and Abraham Lincoln debated seven times, around the state of Illinois. Though Douglas didn't like slavery, he extend the reach. The Nebraska-Kansas replaced the Missouri Compromise, and opened the territories to slavery. This bill made many Northerners angry and pushed the country closer to civil war. Later on he regretted his part taken in the bill.
Personally Abraham Lincoln is like one of my idols. I think he always knew the right things to say at the right time. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. Soon after he took office the Civil war began. As president during the war, Lincoln built up the Republican party to be strong an withholding. Lincoln tried and succeed to get many of the northern Democrats to the union cause. On January 1, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln established the Emancipation Proclamation, that stated that all slaves were free of the Confederacy.
Jefferson Davis was the president of the southern of the Confederacy during the Civil war. Before he became what he is known for, Davis lived for eight years owning a cotton plantation at Davis Bend. Slaveholder, Davis belied that slavery was important for the lives of southerns. In 1857 Jefferson Davis was selected to be the president of the Confederacy.
Ulysses S. Grant was the General in Chief of the Union army and the 18th president of the united states. During the Civil War, Grant sought out the control of the Mississippi Valley. In 1862 he took Fort Henry and attacked Fort Donelson. In Vicksburg, Mississippi Grant won a great victory against the Confederate. And in the year of 1864 Grant and his army fought many battles with pure notion of beating Robert e. Lee. Though over the course of the year his army greatly diminished, it was Robert E. Lee that surrendered in 1865 .
Robert E. Lee was a General for the Confederate army, and reasonable opponent of Ulysses S. Grant. Though Lee thought slavery was a bad thing, he blamed the national conflict on abliohnest and decided to go to the pro-slavery. He chose to fight and defend his homeland.
William Tecumseh Sherman was a major General during the Civil War. Sherman was part of the Union Army, Abraham Lincoln was very impressed with Sherman, and was the one that promoted him to general. One of the battles that Shermen led his troops was to Chattanooga, where he fought the confederate solider with vigor. William continued to fight for the union side of the nation until the war ended in1865.
